I have heard that one of the reasons Afghanistan is a thorn in the flesh of mighty powers of the world is that the people do not live in cities. Most of people live in the countryside and raise their own food. Strange. I am sure the dry and mountainous terrain had nothing to do with their resistance to foreign powers.
I have also heard recently that there was a very great First Nations Culture here in North America. There was actually a pyramid built in the middle of prairies at one time. Before the Spanish, French and British came to investigate. By the time they were able to travel again the black plague had devastated much of the world including the original inhabitants here in North America.
And the main staple was corn in western hemisphere- not just Mexico!! There was already an elaborate trading system established before the French joined in and removed the beavers. The European did not invent the fur trade or the trade in furs.
It was all about trading certain animals that lived in the different parts of the continent as well as other food-corn, fish, (fish) oils and canoes.
