Thrift Stores are places where people can donate used clothing, dishes, toys. These items are then sold to other people at a great discount.
The first thrift stores were operated in England by the Salvation Army. Picking up the "garbage" clothes and selling them is a great idea. The profits that the Salvation Army and other thrift stores make go into charity work for the most part.
When I was little, my parents would have "rummage sales" once a month. They would take the donated clothing and other household items and display it on tables in the basement of the church and people would come and buy.
Sometimes my parents would take a truck load of donated items to more isolated communities in the winter. These places did not have stores. A lot of the items were flown in through mail order etc. But the whole town had a holiday when my parents showed up. The truck was empty going home.
I continue the heritage and take my kids too. We have avoided the big stores for the most part and have bought 90% of our clothes from these locations around town.
