It is amazing to me that companies existed in the 1400's solely for the purpose of exporting spices to Europe.The northwest passage was to go through the North Atlantic Ocean to China and India.
Now as I read more, the Europeans were trying to avoid the Mongols and the Muslims. Sometimes these were both. I guess the Scandinavian Vikings where no longer a threat to the sailors. But all this was after the "black death" that killed 1/3 of the population of Europe.
